The Light in Darkness

1 John 1:5-10

If you’ve ever been anywhere during complete and total darkness, even the smallest light illuminates brightly. Unfortunately we’ve had many of our fellow Mississippians without lights during the last winter storm. John describes Jesus as the ultimate light to illuminate our way as mankind.

I. The Light is Announced (v.5)
a. Total affirmation – God is light. (Isaiah 60:19) is a prophecy about the Messiah. “The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.” Also listen to (John 8:12) “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
b. True attribute – “and in him is no darkness at all.”
II. The Light Causes Appropriate Exposure (v.6) We don’t know that we’re in need of a Savior unless we know that we’ve sinned and that we know the consequences of sin.
a. Knowledge that all have sinned. (Romans 3:23) “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
b. Knowledge of the awful consequences of sin and the awesome gift of salvation. (Romans 6:23) “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
c. Knowledge of the proper action. (Proverbs 28:13) “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

III. The Light Gives Absolute Cleansing (vv.7-9)

How? The confession of sin

a. His blood is the cleansing covenant.
b. Our confession is the commitment to that covenant.
IV. The Light Accomplishes the Truth (v.10) We cannot lie to an all knowing almighty God! He knows our need for salvation. When we are grounded, anchored in the Word of God, the truth becomes overwhelmingly clear.

(John 8:31-32) “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
