I. The Reality Before Coming to Christ (Ephesians 2:1-3)

  1. We were Dead (v.1) “were dead in the trespasses and sins…” We were in a state of separation from God. Sin has caused each one of us to become estranged from our Creator. A relationship with Christ is the answer to cross from death to life. Listen to John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
  2. We were Demonically Inspired (v.2) “following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.”
  3. We were Disobedient (v.2) “following the course of this world…disobedience…”
  4. We were Disastrous (v.3) “by nature children of wrath…”

II. The Radical Love of Christ (Ephesians 2:4-7) It’s a scandal. It doesn’t seem true, but it was all for you! It’s radically rigged for our good and God’s glory!

  1. His mercy and love, His passion for us. (v.4)
  2. His giving of life, His power to us. (v.5) This very similar to Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God is the only one who can bring the dead to life!
  3. His giving us hope, His placement of us. (v.6)
  4. His giving us a future, His plan for us. (v.7)

III. The Results of Having Christ (Ephesians 2:8-10) When you realize your life was rigged for God’s purpose, plan, and pleasure, you love Christ even more.

  1. The powerful gift of grace. (v.8)
  2. The powerless works of man. (v.9) Many people feel that they can earn their salvation, it’s not possible. We must come to Jesus Christ!
  3. The promise for God’s people. (v.10) You were made in God’s image. You were made for His glory!

If growing means starting with extreme gratitude for what Christ has done for me, the next step in growth is to realize that it was rigged for me! This should encourage and challenge us to share the gospel! We were rigged for His workmanship, for His glory!
