Driven by the Power of the Gospel

Romans 1:8-17

I.   The Desire to Proclaim Christ (Romans 1:8-15)

a. The Glorious Reputation of God’s People (v.8) in verse 8, the phrase “I thank my God” or to give thanks is the Greek word eucharisto in which we get the word Eucharist.
b. A Grateful Remembrance of God’s Purpose (vv.9-13)
c. A Gratifying Desire to Relay the Message of God’s Promises (vv.14-15)

II.  The Definite Power of Salvation (Romans 1:16) The word power here is the Greek word “dunamis” from which we get the word dynamite. A.T. Robertson said that “He had seen the dynamite of God at work.” This power is the same power in Acts 1:8 and in 1Cor. 6:14 “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.” This supernatural power transforms us and causes us to be different! If you have experienced God’s transforming power than you have peace, joy, etc and list as displayed in Galatians 5:22-23.

a. Power for boldness (v. 16) “not ashamed”
b. Power for believers regardless of ethnicity (v. 16) “Jew first and also the Greek.” (Acts 10:34-35) “So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.”

III. The Direct Promise by Faith (Romans 1:17) What is promised by faith? Righteousness is given to us by faith in Christ! The phrase the “righteous shall live by faith” is recorded in Galatians 3:11, and in Hebrews 10:38, but it originated from Habakkuk 2:4. If you have righteousness, it’s because you have placed faith in Jesus Christ. The supernatural explosion of the gospel message has pierced your heart. You now live by faith!

a. Faith is revealed (v.17)(Romans 10:17)
b. Righteousness is the result of faith (v.17)
