Jesus calling Peter Simon meant that he was about to correct him.

v.15 “do you love me more than these?”  These referred to the fishing stuff such as nets and boats that Peter had returned to after the crucifixion of Jesus.  It could mean do you love me more than these men, other disciples.

Love Requires Single-Mindedness v.15

Luke 16:13 “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

He is calling Peter to serve Him and abandon other pursuits.

Peter aware of his failures does not reply to Jesus with the same type of love.

Love Reproduces Service vv.16-17

Peter shows that he fulfilled this charge of Christ with humility.  Listen to 1 Peter 5:1-5 “So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,[a] not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Love Repents from Sin v.19a.

2 Corinthians 7:9-11 “As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.  For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.”

Love Reconciles with the Savior v.19b.

James 4:7-8 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
